History of the Burmese Kyat (MMK)

The Burmese Kyat (MMK) has gone through a tumultuous history, specifically:

The first Burmese kyat in 1889

The first Kyat was a currency minted in gold and silver in Myanmar until 1889. This kyat was divided into 20 pe or could also be divided into 4 pya (5 pe), 10 mu (2 pe), or 5 mat. (4 pe).

In terms of exchange rate, 16 silver kyats are equivalent to 1 gold kyat. The silver kyat is equivalent to the Indian rupee, the currency that the British authorities implemented in Myanmar after the country lost its sovereignty and became a British colony.

The second Burmese kyat (1943–1945)

When Japan occupied Myanmar in 1942, they used a new currency based on the rupee. By 1943, Japan reissued the kyat with the aim of replacing the rupee. The 1943 kyat was divided into 100 cents.

However, after World War II ended and Japan was defeated, this kyat completely lost its value. The rupee was then used again in Myanmar.

The third Burmese kyat (1952–now)

The third kyat or modern kyat was introduced into circulation on July 1, 1952, replacing the rupee at par. This new currency unit is divided into 100 pya, according to the decimal system. This is the official kyat currently in use in Myanmar to this day.

Burmese Kyat (MMK) value

The Myanmar Kyat (MMK) plays an important role in Myanmar's domestic economy, but has limited influence in the region and on the international stage.

As the official currency, the Kyat is widely used in daily transactions and domestic economic activities. However, due to the political and economic instability in Myanmar, the value of the Kyat is often unstable and under high inflationary pressure.

In the regional and global economy, the role of the Kyat is quite modest. Due to international sanctions and prolonged economic isolation, the Kyat is rarely used in international transactions. Foreign investors and businesses often prefer to use strong currencies like the US dollar or euro in transactions with Myanmar. This reflects that, although Myanmar has great economic potential due to its abundant resources, the country's currency has not yet achieved a significant position in the global financial market.

The development and stability of the Kyat in the future will largely depend on Myanmar's economic reforms and political stability.

Factors affecting the value of Burmese Kyat (MMK)

The value of the Kyat (MMK) is influenced by many economic and financial factors, including:

  • Global economic situation: Trade relations and the international economic situation have a significant impact on the value of the Kyat. For example, an economic recession in Myanmar's main trading partners could reduce export demand, leading to a decrease in the value of the MMK.

  • Myanmar's government monetary policy: The government can intervene in the monetary and foreign exchange markets to stabilize the value of MMK through fiscal policies or direct interventions in the foreign exchange market.

  • World gold price (XAU/USD): The price of gold affects the monetary policy of many countries. When gold prices rise, causing the Kyat to strengthen, the Central Bank of Myanmar may sell Kyat to prevent the exchange rate from increasing too much in order to maintain the competitiveness of Myanmar's exporters.

  • Myanmar's bank interest rates: The interest rates of the Central Bank of Myanmar play an important role in the value of the Kyat. Increasing interest rates can cause the Kyat to appreciate due to attracting investors with high yields. Conversely, low interest rates can decrease the value of the MMK as investors seek better yield channels.

  • Bitcoin/USD price: Currently, there are no specific statistics on the correlation between Bitcoin and the Kyat price, but large capital inflows into the cryptocurrency market, especially Bitcoin, could indirectly impact the Kyat exchange rate in the context of the growing popularity of digital assets.

The future of the Burmese Kyat (MMK) is contingent upon several interrelated factors, including political stability, economic reforms, and external influences. Following the military coup in February 2021, the MMK has experienced significant volatility, exacerbated by international sanctions and internal conflict. The Central Bank of Myanmar's monetary policy, particularly its ability to manage inflation and stabilize the currency, will be crucial in determining the MMK's future value.

Economic reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and attracting foreign investment could bolster confidence in the currency. Additionally, the global economic environment, including commodity prices and regional economic trends, will impact the MMK's performance. The ongoing humanitarian crisis and the potential for further political upheaval pose risks that could undermine any recovery efforts.

While there are pathways for stabilization and growth of the MMK, significant challenges remain. Continuous monitoring of both domestic and international developments will be essential for predicting the currency's trajectory in the coming years.
