The Falkland Islands Pound (FKP) is the official currency of the Falkland Islands - an archipelago in the South Atlantic on the continental shelf of Patagonia. The symbol is £ and the ISO 4217 code is FKP, issued and managed by the Central Bank of the Government of the Falkland Islands. The Falkland Islands Pound is pegged to the British Pound.

The history of the formation and development of the Falkland Islands Pound (FKP)

The Falkland Islands have been under British administration since the 19th century. Before the introduction of the FKP, British currency was widely used in the area due to British dominance over the islands.

But by 1899, the Falkland Islands Pound was first issued, replacing the British Pound in transactions. Since then, the FKP has become the official currency of the Falkland Islands. However, the British pound is still accepted here.

The Falkland Islands Pound (FKP) Denominations

The Falkland Islands Pound (FKP) was issued in two forms: coins and banknotes.

FKP coins

  • In 1974, coins with denominations of 1/2, 1, 2, 5, and 10 pence were introduced.

  • In 1980, the 50-pence coin was introduced, followed by the 20-pence coin in 1982, the 1-pound coin in 1987, and the 2-pound coin in 2004.

  • The halfpenny coin was last issued in 1983 and then withdrawn from circulation.

  • In 1998, the 5, 10, and 50 pence coins were released in smaller sizes similar to the current UK coins and replaced the larger previous versions.

  • In 2004, the £2 coin was introduced.

  • In 2020, the Falkland Islands issued a 12-sided 1-pound coin with materials and dimensions similar to the British coin. And announced the withdrawal of the 1-pound coin in January 2023 with the support of the Royal Mint.

All the coins of the Falkland Islands have the same composition and size as the corresponding coins of the United Kingdom. Currently, the Falkland Islands pound coins include the following denominations:

  • 1 cent

  • 2 cents

  • 5 cents

  • 10 cents

  • 20 cents

  • 50 cents

  • 1 pound

  • 2 pounds

FKP banknotes

  • From 1899 to 1901, the government issued banknotes with denominations of 5 shillings (5/-), 10 shillings (10/-), 1 pound, and 5 pounds. Among them, the 5 shilling (5/-) note was issued until 1916.

  • In 1917, after decimalization, the 10 shilling note was converted into 50 pence, and the design remained unchanged.

  • In 1975, £10 banknotes were introduced. Then in 1984 came the £20 note and in 1990 the £50 note.

The banknotes of the Falkland Islands have the same images, differing only in denomination and color.
